Why You Want to Know What Your Body Needs Postpartum
Why You Want to Know What Your Body Needs Postpartum
Why Postpartum Care Isn’t Optional (and What Your Body is Telling You After Birth)
Immediately after birth, your body undergoes profound changes—whether you had a natural birth with no interventions or a medically assisted delivery. Maybe you found yourself shaking uncontrollably afterward; this is your body’s way of processing the immense shock of labor. It’s completely normal. (Watch the video below!)
But here’s the truth: the physical, hormonal, and digestive changes your body experiences postpartum requires more than just rest and a few home cooked meals.
Your Body’s Digestive Changes Postpartum
In many traditional cultures, postpartum care for the first 21-40+ days has been a cornerstone of healing and recovery for every mother. These cultures understand the significant impact birth has on the mothers body, especially her digestive system —something that has unfortunately been lost in much of our society in the Western world.
After birth, your digestive system slows down, and production of enzymes and digestive juices is diminished (aka “digestive fire” ). Without proper support, this can lead to bloating, gas, reflux, constipation, depression, anxiety and hormone imbalances that extend far beyond the expected postpartum adjustments.
If you had medical interventions during labor, your body faces an even greater challenge. It’s working to detoxify from the medications and heal external scars (like from a C-section). And every woman is healing internally where the placenta detached.
Your Nutritional Needs are Non-Negotiable
Let’s get real: growing a baby for nine months, giving birth, and then breastfeeding to sustain this little life is a massive journey. Your body has given so much, and now it’s asking for nourishment to rebuild itself.
Without the right foods, and going back to your ‘normal’ eating habits – as healthy as they might be – your body may struggle to absorb essential nutrients—leaving you depleted, low-energy, and unable to produce the quality breast milk your baby needs. Just a sidenote: Your breastmilk is always going to best for baby, despite what you’re eating. It’s you that it’s going to affect. This is why a nourishment plan isn’t just “nice to have”; it’s vital for every mother’s healing and wellbeing.
The Foods You Need
In those early weeks (and even months) postpartum, the right foods can make all the difference. Focus on:
- Warm, easy-to-digest meals (avoid cold or raw foods, which requires a whole lot more digestive enzymes) help with healing, supports circulation
- Proteins and quality fats to regenerate tissues, build cells, and support breast milk production.
- Herbal tea that support digestion
Nutrient-dense meals give your body the building blocks it needs to recover and thrive.
It’s Never Too Late to Heal
Here’s a little secret: even if you’re months—or years—into postpartum, it’s not too late to prioritise your healing. Many mothers are told they just have to ‘deal with it’ once becoming a mother and this is simply not true for many.
I’ve been there. With my 5th baby, I was eating raw vegan foods during pregnancy and postpartum, believing they were the “healthiest” choice. But those foods demanded more enzymes than my depleted digestive system could provide, leaving me exhausted, with recurring reflux and joint pain.
But I had no idea it was related to how I ate in early postpartum and the amount of rest and support I received/gave myself.
When I finally embraced warm, nutrient-rich foods tailored to my postpartum needs (9 years down the track), my body responded with energy, better sleep and better digestion which I hadn’t had in years.
The Postpartum Plan You Deserve
Most mothers put so much energy into their birth plans but don’t realise that postpartum care requires just as much (if not more!) preparation.
Imagine having a complete nourishment plan—recipes, meal plans, shopping lists, and snack ideas—ready to go before your baby arrives. Imagine feeling cared for, knowing exactly what you need to support your body’s recovery. How would it feel to be able to tell family and friends exactly how they can help you with meals that actually nourish you?
This is what I do. I help mamas like you:
- Replenish your nutrients.
- Reclaim your vitality (you’ll need all you can get being a mum!)
- Have a positive mindset that will help you create the life you love
You deserve to feel strong, vibrant, and supported. Let me take the guesswork out of your postpartum care so you can focus on what matters most: enjoying this precious time with your baby/toddler/child.
