Things Mums (and Myself) Wish They Had Known After Having a Baby
When I tell women that I help mothers come back to health and balance after childbirth, say to me how they wish they had been better prepared for postpartum. (Scroll to the bottom to listen to the video instead)
Me included. I had 5 babies. It did get much better by the time I had my 4th and 5th, however, I still didn’t know how much the body changes on the inside, and the ideal foods to be eating back then.
I would have avoided the digestive complaints – bloating, reflux, gall bladder issues and hair loss, depression and anxiety – if I only knew then what I know now.
But that’s how it rolls, right?
You see, when a new mum isn’t prepared – with support, or nourishing meals that are high in quality fats and proteins and foods easy to digest…
When she doesn’t have an environment where there are helping hands so she can rest, power nap several times during the day….
When she has to worry about cooking, laundry, mopping…. then burn out sets in. Overwhelm. Tears. Frustration. Resentment. Postpartum depression and anxiety have become incredibly common.
And it doesn’t have to be this way.
Because you see, it’s not normal to have all this going on.
We’ve created it this way because we haven’t known any better.
I didn’t know any better. Even though I had an amazing supportive partner (still do), he couldn’t do everything all the time, and he had to go back to work after a week or 2 off.
My mum lived over 1000 km away when I had my first and 2nd babies. She was sick with cancer for my 3rd and 4th baby, and I didn’t have her at all for my 5th baby.
But I didn’t know how to ask anyone else for help.
Now, there are more and more women out there to help with prenatal and postpartum care because finally we’re understanding how the system ‘health care’ system is broken.
But we’ve got a long way to go.
This is why I completed my training in Postpartum nutrition.
1. to be able to provide women with a specific and highly successful plan that brings healing and balance back to mothers – even if you’re 5 years or more postpartum.
2. It’s what I wish I’d known and had, 5 times over.
If I can help other mothers avoid the spiral into depression, the anxiety, the health imbalances, that is a job well done.
Because, have a look around you…. how many stressed out mums do you know / see? We’re often angry at our kids, running around like headless chooks, busy, frantic, exhausted and not eating properly.
That has been me too.
Have I completely got it together now? Nope. But I can tell you, i know I’m a lot better. Still a work in progress… I mean, I’m 52 this year, and had 32 years of motherhood, so I’ve not treated my body in the correct way for a long time.
And that’s what happens when we don’t have the right nutrition after birth, we keep eating our regular way, we do way too much in the early weeks and down the track is where we see problems show up. Your healing, or lack of, can affect your menopause.
And now I’m so grateful to have this knowledge and skills behind me to help other women.
If we have more mothers that are feeling well, feeling balanced, getting the help they need, eating the nourishing foods a postpartum body requires then we have a happier mother, a happier family, and that becomes a healthy and happier community.
Imagine if you no longer had a mantra of how tired you feel, overwhelmed, depressed, anxious.
Now there’s more to it of course than just eating the right foods – like healing trauma, having emotional support – which we can certainly look at pointing you in the right direction. But it really starts with our digestive system.
We can’t safely process trauma when the physical body is depleted of essential nutrients.
