Why Raspberry Leaf tea is Good for Mothers
Why Raspberry Leaf Tea is Good for Mothers
Raspberry leaf tea is a woman’s herbal remedy that has been used for centuries to support women’s health, particularly during and after pregnancy.
Here are 6 reasons why this powerful herb can be beneficial for women after birth:
It can assist with reducing postpartum bleeding
Due to the compounds, it contains that can help to tone and strengthen the uterus, which may help to reduce excessive bleeding after birth
Brings some relief to postpartum cramps
For the first few days after birth, many women experience intense contractions stimulated by breastfeeding (yes, mama, sorry it’s not quite over yet) as the uterus contracts back to its pre-pregnancy size . This can actually be quite a shock and be painful for most women (it certainly was for me, and by the time I had my 5th baby, it was really full on. Luckily only for a few minutes when breastfeeding, over about 3 days.) Raspberry leaf tea can help to alleviate these symptoms and promote healing.
Raspberry leaf tea is believed to be a natural galactagogue
Which means it can help to increase your breastmilk production. Of course eating nutrient-dense, high fat and protein foods that digest easily is key for breastmilk production and raspberry leaf tea is a great accompaniment.
A natural immunity booster
Raspberry leaf is rich in antioxidants, which can help to support the immune system and protect against infection
Promotes relaxation and reduce anxiety
After birth, the body can be quite stressed from the shock (even with a straight forward birth) and overwhelming for many women. Raspberry leaf tea contains compounds that can help to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety
Full of vitamins and minerals
Raspberry leaf is packed with good stuff mamas need for recovery after birth. Vitamins B1, B2, B3, C, E and minerals like zinc, calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium & phosphorus which are all essential to help with postpartum
How to brew it
Place 2 tspsns of the leaf into your cup, add boiling water, letting it steep for about 5-8 minutes. Strain. Add honey and squeeze of lemon if you like.
Alternatively, make a flask and keep it beside your breastfeeding chair/area to sip on as you feed your little one. (And if you’re experiencing the postpartum contractions, have a heat pack handy too).
For a flask, steep 1-2 tspns of the leaf per 250 ml of water and strain. Add room temp water so it’s not going to be scalding when you drink from an insulated flask.
I personally find raspberry leaf tea pleasant to drink, and for added benefits you can add in nettle leaf or hibiscus for some extra flavour and a bit of honey if you like.
