In honour of our beautiful boy, who would be 23 today (15/2/23)
Just freshly new to the world, he lets out a roar. Maybe he heard me roar, just moments before.
Immediately I lay back against the bed after birthing upright on one knee, the other leg stretched out. It instinctively felt right to be in this position – there was no thinking, just allowing my body to be as it needed.
He was placed upon my bare chest, and after taking a moment to come back from the surreal feelings that engulf me – and gazing at this beautiful, tiny, wrinkled, wet little Being, he knew what he wanted. But first he peed on me!
Then, helping him to find the source of sweet liquid gold that he could smell and sense, he latched hungrily to my nipple as if he’d been practicing the whole time in utero. Even though he suckled for quite a while – who knows how long – time is an illusion at this point – he would have only had about 1 teaspoon of colostrum. 1 tiny teaspoon that is absolutely packed with goodness for him.
Even though we are told colostrum is beneficial, if I could do it again, I would sit and be ever so consciously aware that what my baby was having in this moment, in the following few days, was – is – perfection. Made to do a specific and important job.
Colostrum contains high amounts of protein, fat, vitamins A, B12, K to name a few and high levels of antibodies, which assist to fight infections and bacteria.
I look back now and feel so grateful for being able to breastfeed our 5 children. It wasn’t easy at times, I admit. I feed 4 of them until they were 2 years old.
And I know many, many mamas who had real challenges, which makes me feel so much compassion.
If you’re having challenges at the moment, pick up the phone today to call a breastfeeding support person and seek the answers you need so you can enjoy – you and your baby can both enjoy – this journey.
Many blessings and much love mama,
Tara
